SUPPORTED INTERNSHIP STUDENT STRIDES TOWARDS CAREER PROGRESSION
An exciting internship is the right fit for an enthusiastic Bury College student who has undertaken a placement at an exclusive new footwear store.
Melissa Kavanagh is completing a six-week placement at Bond Street Shoe Company based in Bury’s Millgate Shopping Centre. The 20 year old is completing two days a week at the shoe store and is undertaking general customer service duties as well as assisting with merchandising.
Melissa is currently in the second year of her Bury College Supported Internship programme, a bespoke course tailored for learners with learning difficulties. This course aims to equip students with the transferable employment skills needed to help prepare them for career progression.
The former St Gabriel’s RC High School pupil has completed previous work placements at the Longfield Suite where she worked on the box office and carried out bar work. Melissa also works voluntary for the RSPCA.
Melissa said, “I love my placement at Bond Street Shoe Company, all the staff here have been really supportive. I really like working in retail and could see myself working in retail in the future.”
Gabriella Armstrong, Store Manager at Bond Street Shoe Company, said of Melissa’s progress, “Melissa has been a star during her placement and it is brilliant to have a friendly face in the store. She has grown in confidence and picks up all her tasks quickly. As a local Bury business, we were keen to support the Supported Internship initiative as it is really nice to give students new opportunities.”
