Waste Management Company Recycles Training Opportunities

A national business is giving its staff the opportunity to develop new skills and progress their careers through Bury College apprenticeship programmes.

Viridor, part of the FTSE 250 Pennon Group, is a sustainability company which transforms waste into quality recycled materials and vital renewable energy. The business, which operates more than 300 facilities across the UK, is committed to providing continuous personal and professional development through training opportunities.

Employees Anne Farrington and Liam Ryder, who are based at Viridor’s Bolton branch on Higher Swan Lane, recently completed their apprenticeship qualifications. Having identified an opportunity to gain new qualifications to help with career progression, the duo were keen to undertake an apprenticeship programme which could help with their future career prospects.

Administration Assistant Anne has worked for the company for six years and felt it was the right time to develop new skills and gain a qualification to help with her day to day work. Anne, who has completed the Level 2 Customer Service apprenticeship, said, “It has been over 40 years since I undertook any form of training or completed a course so for me it was a huge challenge which I really enjoyed. I am now more aware when I am dealing with customers and have a greater understanding of my role.”

Liam has recently completed his Level 2 Warehousing apprenticeship which he believes has made him more pro-active in his role as an Acting Purchasing and Stores Supervisor. During his apprenticeship, Liam developed and implemented a new strategy to manage and control his stock.

The 22 year old has already enjoyed career progression having joined the company in 2014 as a Stores Assistant and received a promotion to supervisor level. Liam will now begin his Level 3 Team Leading apprenticeship to equip him with the knowledge to progress further in the company.

Liam said, “My apprenticeship with Bury College was great and I now feel ready to gain my level 3 qualification. I am looking forward to learning how to lead and manage a team and how to handle certain situations.”

Brian Norris, Business Service Manager at Vividor believes in the value of apprenticeships. Brian added, “The Bury College apprenticeship process ran very smoothly with regular visits, contact and support from the assessor. I am keen for staff within my department to constantly review and improve their skills in order to support their progression.”
