Bury College Apprentice, Jamie Barry

An aspiring accountant has scooped an apprentice of the year award and impressed industry professionals during a regional competition.

Jamie Barry is currently completing an AAT Higher Apprenticeship at Avonside Group, one of Britain’s largest roofing contractors with 29 branches nationwide. Based at Avonside Head Office in Heywood, Jamie impressed the company with his ongoing commitment to his role and was awarded Apprentice of the Year, beating off competition from over 40 other Avonside apprentices.

Adding to his competition success, Jamie, from Rochdale, was also placed third in the Young Trainee of the Year Award category during the Celebrating Construction in South Yorkshire Awards 2016. These annual awards recognise and celebrate exceptional talent in the construction industry.

21 year old Jamie currently undertakes the role of Accounts Assistant at Avonside where he is the purchase and sales ledger and is responsible for making payments, collating reports and answering customer queries.

The former Matthew Moss High School pupil completed his AAT Level 2 and Level 3 and chose to progress to the higher apprenticeship in order to have the skills and knowledge needed to succeed within the industry.

Jamie said, “Choosing to do my higher apprenticeship was a big step. I am gaining in-depth subject knowledge and learning about accounting in great detail. Upon completion of my Level 4 AAT I would like to complete my Association of Chartered Certified Accountants which is recognised as the highest award within the industry.”

Alison Joyce, Business Skills Tutor at Bury College, said of Jamie’s achievements, “Jamie has a great attitude to learning. Despite his busy job, Jamie has attended college classes and been able to meet all tasks set. I am pleased that he has been recognised for his hard work and have no doubt he will go on to achieve his ACCA qualifications.”

Kathryn Wyre, Assistant Curriculum Manager for AAT and Accounts at Bury College added, “Jamie is extremely hard working and clearly dedicated.  He has done fantastically well in his AAT studies and fully deserves the recognition for his hard work.”
