An enthusiastic Bury apprentice is the latest individual to secure a career-ready apprenticeship at a local business committed to supporting and investing in young people.
Jack Mason is delighted to have secured a full-time permanent contract at The Vacuum Pouch Company Ltd after completing his Level 2 Bury College Warehousing apprenticeship. The knowledge, skills and experience the 19-year-old has gained has allowed Jack to take his first steps into a growing industry.
The Vacuum Pouch Company Ltd is proud to be the largest supplier of vacuum pouches and packaging to the UK food industry. Keen to provide people with the training needed to progress their careers, the company has a strong track record of recruiting apprentices and rewarding them with contracts of employment.
The former St Gabriel’s RC High School pupil saw the apprenticeship opportunity at the Employment Gateway, a partnership between Bury College and key agencies in Bury which supports individuals into employment through an apprenticeship. Here Jack benefitted from preparation for his interview, updating his CV and sitting an English and mathematics diagnostic.
Jack said of completing his apprenticeship, “I am very happy to have completed and now have a full-time job. The apprenticeship has been great for me, I have achieved my forklift truck license and developed my skills in team-work and self-motivation. I now have a full-time job and my wage has increased which has meant a big weight has been lifted off my shoulders as I could buy a car!”
Lisa Grundy, Bury College Departmental Lead for Construction, was Jack’s assessor throughout his apprenticeship and Jack credits her support both professionally and personally for contributing to his apprenticeship success.
Lisa said of Jack’s achievement, “Jack has been the ideal student. He has worked consistently hard and completed all the action plans I set. We worked together as a team to get the job done and Jack was committed to achieve.”
Jack joins an alumni of former apprentices who have now progressed their careers at The Vacuum Pouch Company Ltd. 19-year-old Chris Nott, a former Bury Church of England High School pupil, completed his Level 2 Warehousing apprenticeship in August 2016 and was offered a full-time permanent contract. Chris, who also found his apprenticeship opportunity with the help of the Employment Gateway, gained skills, knowledge and experience in wrapping and packing, health and safety, picking and preparing orders and stock rotation.
Chris, who also lives in Bury commented, “I really enjoy working at The Vacuum Pouch Company Ltd, I like the environment of working for a family run business. I would definitely recommend the apprenticeship route, it is a good way to start your career and is a stepping-stone to your career.”
Matthew Collinge is now looking forward to progressing his career after completing his Level 2 Sales qualification. The 26-year-old has signed up to complete the Level 3 Sales qualification where he will be required to adopt a more analytical approach to his studies. This includes evaluating and monitoring the needs of a business and devising strategies to ensure that The Vacuum Pouch Company Ltd remains market leaders within the industry.
Matthew, a former St Gabriel’s RC High School pupil who lives in Walmersley, added, “The apprenticeship was good and I am looking forward to completing my Level 3. My assessor was very easy to work with, we did what needed to be done to ensure I succeeded and Lisa was always happy to help.”
Caron Moult, Commercial Manager at The Vacuum Pouch Company Ltd, is proud to support young people on their apprenticeship journeys. Caron said, “The Vacuum Pouch Company has supported the Employment Gateway scheme since 2015. It has been extremely beneficial to our business as we have added three new members to our team, who have developed various skill-sets which are valuable to the business on a day-to-day basis. It has been amazing to see young people integrate and grow with our business.”
