Hairdressers will be able to shampoo and condition hair, cut hair using a range of techniques, style and finish hair to create a variety of looks and colour and lighten hair. Hairdressers must be able to work with all hair types ranging from straight hair to very curly, wiry hair. They also need to be able to carry out consultations with clients, demonstrate the professionalism, values, behaviours, communication skills and safe working practices associated with their role and be able to work without supervision to a high level of precision, with exceptional client care skills.

An enthusiasm for hairdressing is essential, in addition to personal qualities of motivation, good communication and dexterity skills.

An apprenticeship is a real job where you learn, gain experience and get paid. By the end of an apprenticeship, you'll have the right skills and knowledge needed for your chosen career.

As an apprentice you will:

  • Learn and train for a specific job
  • Get paid and receive holiday leave
  • Get hands-on experience in a real job
  • Spend a minimum of 6 hours a week off-the-job to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours relevant to your apprenticeship standard
  • Complete assessments during and at the end of your apprenticeship
  • Be on a career path with lots of future potential

There are different rates of pay for apprentices depending on your age and what year of your apprenticeship you’re in.

Your employment contract should confirm your rate of pay.

You will attend college classes taking place one day per week and will also receive one-to-one support in the workplace with a dedicated Learning and Skill Coach.

You will complete an End Point Assessment with the awarding body City & Guilds and will cover the 2 following areas:

  • Practical observation
  • Oral Questioning

You will also complete the diploma in hairdressing of which you will be assessed throughout, methods will include:

  • Practical observations
  • Online exams

  • Relevant job responsibilities
  • Relevant qualifications and/or an initial end assessment in maths and English will take place prior to commencement
  • Specific entry requirements may be applicable based on employer requirements

You must build your own kit with relevant tools and equipment. You must also follow a dress code whilst working in college salon.
