From nursing and teaching to sports journalism, Bury College students are taking the next steps towards their chosen careers after completing their T Levels.
For Ciara, Tejan and Darcey, the opportunity to gain practical experience alongside their studies has helped them develop their skills and progress their careers at university.
Ciara builds a foundation for a career in nursing
Ciara has progressed to the University of Manchester to study Adult Nursing after completing her T Level in Adult Nursing at Bury College.
The opportunity to gain hands-on experience in healthcare was a key reason for choosing the course.
“I heard feedback from people who went to my school and did the course, and they said it was really beneficial to get the hands-on work experience.”
During her placement on a dementia unit in a care home, Ciara worked alongside nurses, physiotherapists, GPs and pharmacists. The experience helped her understand the different roles involved in patient care and the importance of communicating effectively with patients.
“My placement taught me good bedside manner and communication skills. The course has given me a good basis for going to university.”
She will now be able to build on that practical knowledge as she continues her studies and works towards a career in nursing.
Taking a different route into the sports industry
Tejan’s T Level in Management and Administration allowed him to develop his business knowledge while gaining valuable experience in the workplace.
During his placement at City Air Express, he worked as a finance assistant, completing invoices, filing and responding to customer queries. The experience helped him develop transferable skills, including communication, organisation and self-discipline, which he can take forward into his university studies.
Tejan has since progressed to UCFB to study Multimedia Sports Journalism, where these skills will support him as he works towards his future career.
Reflecting on the benefits of his T Level, he said: “T Levels allow you to become more confident and learn the skills and knowledge that help you in the future.”
Preparing for a career in primary teaching
Darcey is taking the next step towards her ambition of becoming a teacher, having progressed to Edge Hill University to study Primary Education with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
The opportunity to gain classroom experience was a major factor in choosing her T Level in Education and Early Years: Assisting Teaching. As Darcey explained, she liked that the course offered “work experience whilst on placement” and, unlike other options, gave her “the in-classroom experience which will be really beneficial for me at university”.
Her placement at Charlestown Primary School also helped her understand the different needs of pupils and the responsibilities involved in supporting their learning. As she reflected: “It taught me that there’s a range of different abilities in the classroom and that you need to learn to cater to those abilities.”
With first-hand experience of working in a school, Darcey now has a practical foundation to build on as she continues her studies and works towards a career in primary education.
Taking the next step
T Levels combine classroom learning with industry placements, giving students the chance to explore their chosen sector and develop practical skills before moving on to higher education or employment.
For Ciara, Tejan and Darcey, that experience has been part of their journey towards university and their future careers.
