A former Bury College Hairdressing Apprentice has come full circle, embarking on an exciting teaching career which will see him inspire the next generation of Hairdressers.
Billy started studying at Bury College back in 2017. He began on the Barbering Level 2 course and then, motivated by his family and tutors, progressed on to the Hair Professional Level 2 Apprenticeship, employed by John-Lee Guy Hairdressers in Bolton.
“I had already done a year on Barbering, and I wanted to start earning money. My brother had done an Apprenticeship in the past and I saw how well he progressed. I wanted to do the same and my tutors motivated me to go for it. I loved it!”.
After completing both a Level 2 and Level 3 Apprenticeship, Billy decided to take the plunge and go self-employed as a Hairdresser – a career move which he felt like his studies had really prepared him for:
“My Apprenticeships allowed me to build my skill and clientele, so when I finished studying, I felt more than ready then to go self-employed.”
Billy recently visited Bury College to deliver a talk to current Hairdressing Apprentices about transitioning from being an employee to self-employed. “It was great to give them guidance as someone who has actually done it”, he commented.
The next step for Billy is an exciting teaching career.
Not long after his Apprenticeships finished, Billy also attended Bury College University Centre to complete a teaching qualification. He has since secured a part-time teaching role and is looking forward to inspiring the next generation of Hairdressers.
“I was so lucky to have really great tutors during my time at Bury College. I felt motivated and I now want to help others feel like that in my new role as a teacher.”
