On GCSE Results Day, many of our students came together to celebrate the successful completion of their English or Maths course.
An extremely ambitious former Bury College Public Services student is working hard to enter a life-changing career within the British Armed Forces as he prepares to compete 10 weeks of Basic Naval Military Training.
During his time at the College, hardworking Dominic Saxon realised his passion for joining the Forces and was invited to the Armed Forces Careers Office at Manchester Albion Warf which outlined the different career opportunities available to him. From there, Dominic chose to apply for an Engineering Technician Weapons Engineer (ETWE) position and entered a gruelling recruitment process. This involved completing a psychometric test, an interview, a fitness test and a medical test.
The former Newhouse Academy pupil successfully passed the application process and is now on course to attend HMS Raleigh in Torpoint Cornwall in August to complete 10 weeks of Basic Naval Military Training. Dominic will also be completing a Pre-Joining Fitness Test and a Pre-Royal Navy Course which consists of marching and classroom work and learning a range of skills which will be expected from him whilst he is serving in the Royal Navy.
Dominic, who is 20-years-old and lives in Heywood, completed his Level 3 Public Services Diploma in June 2020 and believes the fitness training and leadership skills he developed during his time on the course led him to apply to the Armed Forces.
Dominic, who progressed from a Level 2 to a Level 3 course, said, “My Bury College Public Services course helped me to understand how I could help make a difference in the world by serving in the Royal Navy. Hearing stories from my tutors from their years in the Armed Forces inspired me and made me realise that I wanted to make the world a better place and protect everyone both home and abroad. My time at Bury College was amazing and the trips and visits I experienced motivated me to work harder for my future career. My motto in life is to work hard, help people, learn and thrive – these are the words that keep me going.”
Simon Taylor, Bury College Public Services Team Leader, added, “Dominic was an exemplary student during his time on the Public Services course who worked hard to achieve his ambition of joining the Navy in his first choice trade. All the Public Services staff wish him every success in the world and are sure that he will do really well if he continues to show the same dedication and endeavour he demonstrated during his time with us.”
Dominic’s long-term career goal is to join the Royal Navy and pass out of basic training Phase 1 and then climb to the highest possible rank.
The Bury College Public Services course develops an understanding of the practical and work-related skills needed to prepare for careers in a range of uniformed services which include the Emergency Services, Armed Forces, Police Force, Fire Services and Armed Services.
Take your first step into a rewarding career.
