
Bury College recently hosted a Higher Education Fair for its current learners, welcoming representatives from over 20 different universities.
On Thursday, 20th March 2025, Bury College played host to the Hair and Beauty category of the GM Skills Competition. The event, a vibrant celebration of talent and creativity, brought together nearly 200 students from ten colleges across Greater Manchester, all eager to display their exceptional skills in hairdressing, barbering, media makeup, nails, and beauty therapy.
Themed around the world of musicals, the competition was a dazzling display of artistry and innovation. Participants were challenged to create breathtaking looks inspired by beloved stage productions, blending technical expertise with creative flair. The event saw students pushing boundaries in their respective fields, from intricate hairstyling and precise barbering to stunning media makeup designs, meticulous nail art, and expert beauty therapy treatments.
The GM Skills Competition was a testament to the spirit of collaboration and community among Greater Manchester’s colleges. Students and staff alike embraced the opportunity to learn from one another, share ideas, and build meaningful connections. Adding to the excitement of the event, students from Bury College’s Performing Arts Department brought the ‘musicals’ theme to life with live music and captivating performances.
Beyond displaying technical abilities, the competition provided students with invaluable real-world experience. Competing under time pressure, communicating effectively, and demonstrating creativity under scrutiny are essential skills for thriving in the beauty and hair industries. Industry professionals and expert judges, accredited by the prestigious World Skills Competition, offered constructive feedback, ensuring the students left with enhanced knowledge and confidence to elevate their careers.
A panel of esteemed guest judges from renowned organisations such as Wella, Neal & Wolf, Eve Taylor, Ellisons, City & Guilds, and local salon owners lent their expertise to the competition. Their involvement not only ensured a high standard of judging but also contributed to the fantastic prizes awarded to the winners, further inspiring the next generation of industry professionals.

The college also achieved a commendable 4th place overall, reflecting the dedication and hard work of its students and staff. The overall winners of the competition were Wigan and Leigh College, who demonstrated remarkable talent across disciplines.

Our art students have brought a splash of colour and creativity to Bury Hospice with a striking new mural celebrating the spirit of the local community. Painted by students from the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, the mural features vibrant hydrangeas and iconic Manchester Bees, symbolising unity, resilience, and the six towns of Bury.
