This general pathway supports progression into a wide range of Public Services careers by developing the knowledge, skills, and professional behaviours required for employment and further study. Students will build key skills for a career in Public Services, including communication, leadership, problem-solving, decision-making, and personal responsibility. At Level 5, students can specialise in a Public Services-related occupational area, preparing them to progress to Level 6 study or enter employment. The units develop students’ ability to apply theory and practice, manage complexity and uncertainty, and demonstrate critical evaluation in Public Services contexts. By the end of Level 5, students will have a strong understanding of their specialist area and the ability to perform effectively in public service roles or progress to degree-level study.

The Higher National Diploma in Public Services is coursework based which has no examinations. You will be assessed through a variety of written and in some cases verbal tasks. This assessment method has benefited those who feel less comfortable with exams.
The
degree is delivered by lecturers with a wide range of Public Service experience.
You will also benefit from well established links within the Public Services
including Fire Service, Police Service, Prison Service and the Armed
Forces. To enhance the programme there is an opportunity to participate in
a study visit programme which includes overseas visits to destinations such as
Krakow in Poland. Various guest speakers provide a wealth of knowledge to
support your studies and future employment.
Upon completion of this course you may choose to complete a top-up degree in a related subject to gain a full honours degree, or you could pursue employment in Civil Protection, Crime and Criminal Justice, Public Service Management or the Blue Light Services.
You may also choose to progress directly into industry in a range of public
services such as the police, fire and rescue, prison, ambulance, HM revenue and
customs areas or in the armed forces such as the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air
Force.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.
Successful Completion of HNC Public Services. or equivalent in a Level 4 qualification. You should also have five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including English. You may also be required to attend an interview and/or assessment. If you do not have the standard entry requirements but have the relevant work experience or an alternative qualification you may still be eligible for the course.
The majority of students will be able to access a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England to pay their HE Course Fee.
Self-funding students may pay in 3 instalments in September (33%), January (33%) and April (33%).
