Ismail, a former Bury College Accounting Apprentice, recently returned to the college to share his remarkable learning journey with current learners.
This HNC programme offers you the opportunity to study a Higher National Certificate in Public Services which will help you develop as a professional, self-reflecting individual who can meet the demands of employers in the public services sector. The course will support you in the ever-changing world of the public services, focusing on integrated emergency management, serious organised crime, terrorism and counter terrorism.
The Higher National Certificate/Diploma in Public Services consists of modules covering all aspects of Protective Services from Mental Health and Wellbeing to Counter Terrorism. The course has been set out to give you the best possible starting point to enter into your chosen Public Service, giving not only the theoretical knowledge to succeed but the practical skills too. The course places an emphasis on understanding people, communities and the law with a focus on practical skills to enter into the Public Services. The course will be assessed by coursework assignments with research tasks.

This HNC is
coursework based which has no examinations. You will be assessed through a
variety of written and in some cases verbal tasks. This assessment method has
benefited those who feel less comfortable with exams.
The
degree is delivered by lecturers with a wide range of Public Service experience.
You will also benefit from well established links within the Public Services
including Fire Service, Police Service, Prison Service and the Armed Forces. To
enhance the programme there is an opportunity to participate in a study visit
programme which includes overseas visits to destinations such as Krakow in
Poland. Various guest speakers provide a wealth of knowledge to support your
studies and future employment.
Upon completion of this course you may choose to complete a top-up degree in a related subject to gain a full honours degree, or you could pursue employment in Civil Protection, Crime and Criminal Justice, Public Service Management or the Blue Light Services.
You may also choose to progress directly into industry in a range of public services such as the police, fire and rescue, prison, ambulance, HM revenue and customs areas or in the armed forces such as the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.
64 UCAS points or equivalent in a Level 3 qualification. You should also have five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C) including English. The University Centre will also consider applicants who have passed a Kitemarked Access to Higher Education course (equivalent to 64 UCAS points). You may also be required to attend an interview and/or assessment. If you do not have the standard entry requirements but have the relevant work experience or an alternative qualification you may still be eligible for the course.
The majority of students will be able to access a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England to pay their HE Course Fee.
Self-funding students may pay in 3 instalments in September (33%), January (33%) and April (33%).
