High School pupils from across Bury, Bolton, Manchester and Rochdale brought their A-game to the Bury College Maths Challenge 2018.
Year 10 high school pupils took part in the annual tournament hosted at the Bury College campus. Four pupils from each school went head-to-head in a series of rounds which tested their mathematical knowledge.
Pupils attended from Oulder Hill Community School, Tottington High School, Beech House School, The Elton High School, The Co-operative Academy of Manchester, Hollingworth Academy, Castlebrook High School, Bury Grammar School Boys, Bury Grammar School Girls, Middleton Technology School, Wardle Academy, Parrenthorn High School The Albion Academy, Siddal Moor, St Matthews RC High School, Matthew Moss High School, Broad Oak Sports College, St Monica’s RC High School, Moorside High School, Little Lever School and Kingsway Park High School.
Pupils were challenged to a session of warm up questions, before progressing to a quick fire round, followed by a countdown round based on the hit television programme. The third stage invited students to get up on their feet and move around whilst answering mathematical calculations. The day finished with a team challenge where any wrong answer cost the team marks. All questions were based on GCSE Maths material but were written to challenge and stretch the most able students.
Delighted to claim first place was Bury Grammar School Girls who excelled during all rounds of the competition. Following in second place was Wardle Academy and taking away third place was Oulder Hill Community School.
Bury Grammar Girls pupil Safiyah Patel, said of the competition experience, “We were so surprised to hear that we had won! It was great to partake in the Bury College Maths Challenge and enjoyed the whole day.”
Dr Austin, Head of Maths at Bury Grammar Girls School said of her pupil’s success, “We were really pleased to win and the pupils thoroughly deserved it after working so hard to prepare for the tournament. This is the third year that Bury Grammar Girls has attended the Bury College Maths Challenge and I think it is a great event which raises the profile of maths and encourages more pupils to engage in the subject.”
