What is an Apprenticeship?
An Apprenticeship is a paid job where you learn, gain experience and develop skills.
As an Apprentice with Bury College you will:
- Learn and train for a specific job.
- Get paid and receive holiday leave.
- Receive hands-on experience in a real job.
- Spend a minimum of 6 hours a week off-the-job to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours relevant to your Apprenticeship standard.
- Complete assessments during, and at the end, of your Apprenticeship.
- Be on a career path with lots of future potential.

Who can do an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are available to anyone aged 16 and over. Whether you are a school leaver looking to start your career, or an adult looking to upskill or explore a new career path, an apprenticeship could be a great option for you.
How much do apprentices get paid?
You will earn a minimum of £8 per hour if you’re either:
- Aged under 19.
- Aged 19 or over in the first year of an apprenticeship.
You are entitled to the minimum wage for your age if you are aged 19 or over and have completed the first year of your apprenticeship.

Why study an apprenticeship at Bury College?
Bury College has a range of apprenticeship programmes aimed at helping you reach your full potential.
Our apprenticeships are available in a range of sectors and have been developed by employers to ensure professional training and career progression.
As an apprentice, you are part of our Bury College community, and have access to the same support as other students. In addition to your dedicated Learning and Skills Coach, our Student Services team offers a ‘one-stop shop’ with support that extends to all aspects of student life.
What level do apprenticeships start at?
Apprenticeships start at different levels. The level you start at will depend on your qualifications.
Most apprenticeships start at Level 2. To start at Level 3 (A Level equivalent), you will likely need at least one grade 4 GCSE in Maths or English. However, employers will set their own entry requirements for the job role and generally will expect you to have both Maths and English at grade 4.
At the end of your apprenticeship, you will achieve the equivalent education level. For example, if you complete a level 3 apprenticeship, you will gain the equivalent of an A level. Level 2 is the equivalent of a GCSE.
How are apprenticeships assessed?
You will complete assessments during and at the end of your apprenticeship. This could be done in the following ways:
- Observations
- Professional/Guided Discussions
- Questions and Answers
- Reflective Accounts
- Work Product Evidence
- Witness Statements
- Reviews
The End Point Assessment will be conducted by an official Awarding Body to test if you are competent in your occupation.
