Over 150 Bury College Travel and Tourism students were invited on board the East Lancashire Railway for an exclusive insight into the running of one of the region’s top visitor attractions.
Delighted to have recently scooped the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year award at the Lancashire Tourism Awards, the popular railway has been recognised as making a substantial contribution to the local visitor economy.
Bury College is proud of the longstanding relationship is has with East Lancashire Railway and the work experience opportunities it provides Travel students with each year. The most recent visit involved students being given an induction study where learners discovered more about the popular visitor attraction and the importance of the heritage railway to tourism in Bury and local area.
The trip was also an opportunity to demonstrate team working skills, speak to staff about the benefits of working at the East Lancashire Railway and register their interest in work experience opportunities.
Bury College Travel students are now looking forward to working on board the East Lancashire Railway and supporting the Santa Specials event. The Santa Specials are one of the North West’s most popular Christmas days out with over 40,000 people enjoying the festive experience each year. This year’s event looks set to be the best ever and tickets have been selling in record-time with over 95% of seats now sold out.
Sarah Partington commented, “We are delighted to continue our collaboration with the East Lancashire Railway, our student volunteers are excited to begin work on the popular Santa Specials during which they will be supported to develop a range of employability and wider skills whilst on the trains.”
Mike Kelly, Chairman at the East Lancashire Railway said, “We’ve worked with Bury College for the past few years and are very proud of our relationship. It’s beneficial to the ELR, Bury College and the students themselves to be able to offer work experience opportunities at one of our busiest events of the year. Our Santa Specials have almost completely sold out so the Travel and Tourism students will get a real feel for how we look after such a big event and keep customers happy and returning year after year.”
