 Welcome to Bury College Apprenticeships

This presentation will give you an understanding of all the exciting opportunities available with a Bury College Apprenticeship.

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job.

You will gain a practical understanding and hands on experience of the industry you are looking to start your career in.

Anyone can do an apprenticeship.

If you are leaving full time education, school, college or university and you are looking to gain new skills, an apprenticeship is a great opportunity for you.

Apprenticeships can also lead you onto higher education and are a much sought-after alternative route to university.

There are so many great reasons to become an apprentice. Just some of these benefits include:

  • Earning a wage whilst you gain a recognised qualification
  • Gain practical work based experience, and benefit from a range of excellent progression opportunities
  • Learn at your own pace within a set timeframe
  • Develop your transferable skills and receive exceptional support every step of the way from your qualified Learning and Skills Coach

As an apprentice you are entitled to 6 hours per week, off-the-job training as part of your working week.

This ‘off the job training’ is actually ‘paid learning’ and this may include college attendance or regular visits from your Bury College Learning and Skills Coach in the workplace.

Training may include:

  • Theory lessons in college or the workplace
  • Simulated, or role play exercises
  • Online learning
  • Practical training
  • Shadowing and Mentoring in the workplace, and
  • Formal writing which may include assessments or assignments

The employer or the level and qualification will determine your entry requirements.

Most employers ask for a mix of good grades including excellent attendance, punctuality and of course that dedicated work ethos.

If you have already achieved a grade 4 or higher in your Maths and English GCSE you will be exempt from completing this part of the Apprenticeship.

Bury College apprenticeships are available within a range of sectors and have been developed by employers to ensure professional training with huge potential for career progression.

We currently offer Apprenticeships in the following areas:

An apprenticeship can take between one to four years to complete depending on level, ability and the industry area.

There are apprenticeship opportunities available ranging from Level 2, right up to Level 7 (which is actually equivalent to studying a Master’s Degree).

The level you complete will depend on your previous experience, qualifications and the job role.

If you are an apprentice aged between 16-18 you will be eligible to apply for an Our Pass card, giving young people the freedom to travel right across greater Manchester free of charge at any time.

This pass can be used to travel to and from Bury College and your place of employment.

The apprenticeship team will work with you and support you throughout your apprenticeship journey.

The team is made up of four different services.

Our business advisors, who work with employers to secure vacancies throughout the year.

Our recruitment team who offer expert advice and guidance on apprenticeship opportunities.

Our Learning and Skills Coaches will offer support and guidance throughout the qualification.

Our functional skills team, who help apprentices to continue to develop their maths, and English skills.

Bury College is proud to work in partnership with a wide range of employers. This includes: NHS, Bury Council, the East Lancashire Railway and Bury Hospice.

One of the great benefits of studying an apprenticeship is that you get paid.

Your wage can vary depending on your employer, but the great news is there is a national MINIMUM Apprenticeship wage and is normally reviewed in April each year.

  • Once you have submitted a Bury College Application, you will receive an apprenticeship interview.
