Our talented Art and Design students recently received recognition for their artwork after entering a nationwide arts and crafts competition.
As part of their course projects, Jack Barnard and Amber Kour entered their work in the Crafts Council-organised competition. This nationwide challenge asks primary and secondary school pupils to submit a craft project on one of three themes: play, storytelling, and empowerment.
It aims to ignite craft teaching and learning in the classroom through hands-on creativity. Looking closely at the young artists' creations, the judges assessed how entrants developed their practical craft skills and pushed their ideas further through making. They also looked for evidence of imagination and risk-taking.
Jack Barnard, a former Parrenthorn High School pupil, said: “I feel proud to have won this competition. I learnt some new skills and how to make and design work with different materials.”
Amber Kour, formerly of Elms Bank, added: “In the future, I’d love to work as a designer in the gaming industry. Events and competitions like this one will help me develop the skills that I need to find my dream job.”
Beverleigh Claypool, Team Leader of Level 1 and 2 Vocational Art at Bury College, said: “I am incredibly proud and humbled that our Level 1 Art, Design and Media students have been awarded first prize and commended by the Crafts Council for Yinka's Challenge for the second year. All the students worked extremely hard to create imaginative 3D structures.”
