Bury College Pride Club recently held their end-of-year celebration as they looked back and reflected on the past academic year.

The event came in the middle of Pride Month, a worldwide campaign that celebrates and commemorates LGBT+ activists and moments from throughout history.

Vanessa Nelson, Team Leader of GCSE English at Bury College and Pride Club organiser, said: “Pride Club is a safe space for students to learn about gender, identity and sexuality in a non-judgemental environment. It provides educational information for members of the group, and other students across the college. Additionally, we raise money every year for an LGBT+ charity of the group’s choice.”

The students involved also provided some great feedback. They said:

  • “Pride Club is a vital organisation that provides not only great educational information to its members and other students across the college, but it also provides a safe environment for LGBTQIA students.”
  • “Pride club is a place where we can be ourselves without judgement.”
  • “Pride club is inclusive, supportive and non-judgemental.”
  • “I love that everyone is so welcoming, right from my first day of attending. I like that we do creative things and learn about important events like section 28.”

Pride Club also hosts several important events throughout the year. In February, as part of LGBT History Month, they organised activities to raise money and awareness for the Albert Kennedy Trust, a vital charity that supports LGBT+ people experiencing homelessness.

In addition to helping students with their academic work, Bury College is also a place where you can grow as an individual, make friends and have fun! For more information on the student experience, click here: https://burycollege.ac.uk/full-time/student-experience
