Bury College has taken a firm stand against hate crime and racism by raising awareness during Hate Crime Awareness Week, which ran from 12th to 19th October, in addition to supporting the Show Racism the Red Card initiative.
Throughout the week, the college hosted a variety of activities aimed at sending the message that we will not tolerate any forms of discrimination, as well as educating students and staff about these important causes. Central to raising awareness was our dedicated stand in the student cafeteria, Millennium Vista. This stand featured key information about Hate Crime Awareness Week and what our students can do to spread the message. This stand displayed the powerful messages created by our students, sharing their voices in support of the cause.
Key messages of unity and inclusivity were broadcast across the college, with the Hate Crime Awareness Week TikTok being shown across TV screens across the campus. As well as promotion of the week on our social media channels, educating the students on how they can help stand up to hate crime.
During this week staff and students also wore red as a symbol of solidarity against racism as part of the Show Racism the Red Card campaign. We also hosted a football tournament to unite students through sports and to further raise awareness for the cause.
As a college, we remain committed to raising awareness about important issues and fostering an environment where the safety of our staff and students is paramount. Causes such as these help to promote respect and understanding, helping to build that environment.
