A Level Accounting students were given an exclusive insight into careers within the industry as a Bury College Alumni graduate returned to the college to offer careers advice.
Students were invited to a workshop delivered by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) professionals, one of which was former Bury College learner Kane Bennett. 21 year old Kane from Rochdale left Bury College after securing an impressive range of A Levels in Accounting (A*), Mathematics (A) and Economics (B) before progressing onto the University of Manchester where he was awarded a 2:1 BSc Honours degree in Accountancy.
Following university, Kane joined a graduate’s scheme at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) where he began his role as a Trainee Tax Accountant. The former Whitworth High School pupil now completes Corporate Tax Advising and takes on a compliance based role here he keeps clients up-to-date on crucial legislations.
Kane regularly re-visits the Bury College A Level Accounting department to share his professional experiences and outline the options available for students upon completion of their A Levels.
Kane said, “I really enjoy coming back to Bury College and delivering presentations. Studying my A Levels at Bury College really prepared me for my job and benefited from supportive tutors and quality advice. Today’s workshop is all about showing students their next steps and explaining exactly what PwC is and outlining the application process.”
During the presentation, students found out about the different routes available after college, either progression directly onto university or directly into the workplace. Students were also provided with some background information about PwC as well as a clear outline of what the company was looking for when recruiting.
Former Middleton Technology High School pupil, 17 year old Ola Kornaga, who is studying A Levels in Business, Accounting, Art and IT, found the session extremely valuable.
Ola said, “Today’s workshop was brilliant as I was able to find out more about the options available upon completion of my A Levels. I would really like to progress onto university to study Accounting and Finance.”
Rizwan Qureshi, Bury College Lecturer in Accounts added, “This is the third time that Kane has returned to Bury College to deliver this style of workshop and is an excellent enrichment opportunity for students and raises awareness of the different options available. Kane is a perfect example of the great success that can be achieved.”
