T Level student Cameron Taylor made such a fantastic impression during his industry placement with Bury BID (Business Improvement District), which has led to an exciting opportunity to return to the team over the summer.

As part of his T Level in Management and Administration at Bury College, Cameron completed over 315 hours of placement, gaining valuable experience at Bury BID’s base in the Fusilier Museum. His responsibilities included uploading events to the BID website, creating social media content, delivering newsletters, and assisting with town centre events.

“I’d describe T Levels as rewarding, hands-on, and really valuable,” said Cameron. “The placement gave me the chance to take what I’d learned in the classroom and put it into practice.”

A warm welcome back

Following the completion of his placement, Cameron was invited back by Nigel Shields, Bury BID’s Town Centre Director, to rejoin the team and continue contributing to key projects.

“Cameron has been fantastic,” said Nigel. “He’s developed a great understanding of our systems and the businesses we work with. With support from our Marketing Manager, he now logs events on our website and plays a role in helping us communicate with the local community.”

“This is a great example of how a placement can lead to a longer-term role. Cameron returning over summer shows what’s possible when young people are given meaningful opportunities.”

Preparing for the next steps

Cameron is also planning for his next step, preparing to start a Sports Management degree at UCFB Manchester later this year. He hopes to continue supporting Bury BID alongside his university studies.

“Nigel asked me to come back a couple of months after my placement ended, which I was really pleased about,” added Cameron. “I’ll be working with the team this summer, and I’m hoping to keep helping out even after I start university.”

Encouraging local businesses to get involved

Nigel is keen to use Cameron’s success to encourage more local employers to offer placements to students.

“There’s a perceived shortage of opportunities for young people, but placements like this show that students can make a real difference,” he said. “They bring energy, fresh ideas and can provide really valuable support, especially during busy periods like summer or Christmas.”

“With over 400 businesses across Bury town centre, there’s real potential for more placements and even paid roles for students. Cameron’s journey shows how beneficial this can be for both the student and the business.”

Reflecting on the placement experience, Nigel also praised the process and support in place for employers working with students.

“We’ve had great communication throughout. From the start, we were given a clear idea of each student’s skills and the expectations of the placement. That kind of preparation and safeguarding makes a real difference. It’s been a very positive experience.”

Advice for future T Level students

Cameron is now encouraging other students to explore the opportunities that T Levels at Bury College can offer.

“If you’re thinking about doing a T Level, I’d say go for it,” he said. “The work experience is such a valuable part of the course. It gives you real insight into working life, and helps you build skills that employers are really looking for.”

Congratulations to Cameron on his continued success! His hard work and determination are a brilliant example of how T Level placements can lead to exciting opportunities and career growth.
