AMBITIOUS A LEVEL STUDENTS TAKE THE PATHWAY TO CAMBRIDGE SUCCESS
Four A Level students from Bury College attended a prestigious conference for high-achieving young women, hosted by Murray Edwards College, University of Cambridge.
The ‘Pathways to Success’ is an annual event which is intended to both celebrate students’ achievements so far and to inspire them to aim high and be ambitious in their future choices. It is also an introduction to university life whilst allowing them to explore the different academic options for the future.
The Bury College A Level students were four of just 70 students, specially selected from schools across the UK. During their visit they took part in workshops about how they see ‘success’ and the importance of ‘daring’ to aim high, as well as enjoying a celebration dinner.
Lilian Anderson, Ourania Gerasi, Ellie Lyons and Abigail Jones enjoyed a varied range of activities including a series of workshops, inspirational talks by former students of the universities, celebratory dinners, subject specific taster lectures, tours of the universities, discussions and socialising with undergraduates.
Ellie Lyons, a former The Elton High School pupil, is studying A Levels in Psychology, English Literature and History and enjoyed the experience. Ellie said, “The Cambridge visit was an eye-opening experience and I met some inspiring people.”
Abi Jones, also a former The Elton High School pupil and studying A Levels in Psychology, English Literature and History added, “It was a great experience and enabled me to see what university life is like.”
Gill Campion, Learning Improvement Leader and Team Leader of A Level English Literature and Language at Bury College said of the experience, “Here at Bury College we encourage all our students to aim high. The residential at Murray Edwards College allows our high-achievers the opportunity to explore their aspirations in unique surroundings. Our students always have found it to be a truly inspirational experience.”
Dr Andrew Spencer, Admissions Tutor at Murray Edwards College and the organiser of the event added, “Pathways to Success is a highlight of the College calendar; it is always a privilege to welcome bright and ambitious young women to Murray Edwards College. Murray Edwards College is a fantastic environment for teaching and learning, and we have long been committed to helping young women to dream big, take new opportunities and succeed in Cambridge and beyond. We hope that the attending students have left us with a clearer sense of their future goals and look forward to following their successes.”
