University Student Supports Public with Community Initiative

A highly motivated career-minded woman has achieved the qualifications and experience needed to open a community youth club following the completion of her Bury College Access course and progression onto Bury College University Centre.

30-year-old Leanne Clements enrolled onto the Bury College Level 2 Access course in 2014 before progressing onto the Level 3 Access to Higher Education Diploma. Having worked in a nursery and in the care sector, Leanne wanted to gain qualifications which could allow her to progress her career and find her true vocation.

Whilst completing her Bury College Access courses, Leanne worked within Community Care. With flexible study Leanne was able to work and find a sector that she was truly passionate about. The Level 3 Access course allowed Leanne to gain the subject specific skills and knowledge to progress to studies at university level.

Leanne said, “I loved my Access course and my tutors and can’t sing their praises enough as they literally can’t do enough for you. My Access course allowed me to achieve my career success.”

Having enjoyed her time at Bury College, Leanne, from Radcliffe, chose to progress to Bury College University Centre and enrolled onto the Working with Children and Families BA Hons. A degree which is designed to cover a wide range of issues affecting children and families in today’s society, this career-driven qualification can lead graduates into jobs ranging from schools to family support work.

Leanne, who is in the second year of her three year degree, has now opened her own youth club based in Radcliffe named The Outwood Bound Youth Club based on Outwood Road. The youth club is open to everyone aged between 5-16 years old. Leanne has been responsible for organising the clubs policies and procedures, organising a re-launch event and assigning jobs to the clubs volunteers.

Alongside her youth club work and university studies, Leanne also supports a 16 year old child with severe multiple complex needs to provide respite for the child’s family.

Leanne added, “Bury College University Centre is brilliant. Although challenging is it very rewarding and I receive fantastic pastoral and one-to-one support. I am looking forward to working towards my overall career goal of taking care of Behavioural Management in High Schools.”
