Music Alumni Hits the Right Note with Career Success

A former Bury College Music student has paved a hugely successful career within the industry since completing his studies in 2008.

Craig Lees achieved his BTEC National Diploma in Music Performance qualification and has used the skills, knowledge and experience gained at Bury College to secure an exciting career as a renowned Contemporary Vocal Coach, Choral Director, and Arranger. Craig is also proud to lecture on the Popular Music Degree at Leeds College of Music, where he founded the LCoM Contemporary Pop Choir in 2014. He is also the Musical Director behind Leeds Contemporary Singers, a nine-piece vocal harmony group that recently rose to fame as the winners of BBC One's Pitch Battle show.

Craig’s extensive career portfolio doesn’t end there; the former Wardle Academy pupil also coaches for Smith's record label (Nigel Martin-Smith) and has also had the pleasure of working with chart-topping artist Will Young (whilst on Pitch Battle) and internationally acclaimed artist Marc Almond. Craig is also a director of the British Voice Association, an association of multi-disciplinary professionals who work to promote the field of voice in its broadest sense.

28 year old Craig, who is currently working on a new project with ITV, said about his time at Bury College, “My time at Bury College was genuinely one of the most enjoyable times of my life. The teaching and facilities were both first-rate but it is the warm and friendly atmosphere is what sticks is my mind. There was a real sense of camaraderie between everyone studying music at the time, which made working towards our performances and projects a pleasure and not a chore. The skills I learnt at Bury College prepared me well for studying music at university and stood me in good stead for a successful career in the music industry”.
