TRAVEL STUDENT SHORTLISTED FOR COVETED AWARD
A Bury College student is in the running for a national student of the year accolade.
Alison Healey has been nominated and shortlisted for the BTEC Student of the Year award, an annual event which celebrates excellence in vocational education across schools, colleges and universities. The Level 3 Travel and Tourism student from Farnworth was nominated by her Bury College tutor for her ongoing passion, dedication and commitment to her studies.
The former St James’s Church of England High School pupil said of her nomination, “I am really happy and shocked! It is so nice to be recognised and is the motivation I need to keep on going.”
During her time at Bury College, 18-year-old Alison has enjoyed many overseas trips and visits where she has gained the sills, knowledge and experience of different cultures. These experiences will go a long way in helping to prepare Alison for progression into employment within the travel and tourism sector.
One of the trips which Alison enjoyed was a visit to Rioja in Spain where she spent five days working with 8 year old Spanish school pupils teaching English. Alison said of this experience, “My trip to Rioja was amazing! It really built my confidence and was an opportunity to learn about different cultures and lifestyles. The whole trip really opened up my eyes.”
As part of her Bury College study programme, Alison completed a work experience placement at the Premier Inn Bury where she worked on the main reception and undertook front of house responsibilities. Following the success of her work experience placement, Alison was awarded a part-time contract with the hugely popular hotel chain.
In addition to her studies, Alison is also completing the NCFE Cabin Crew certificate as part of her study programme. This is an industry recognised, career ready qualification.
Alison added, “My work experience placement really built my confidence and I loved the operational side of the job. It is amazing how work experience can pay off and actually lead to securing a job. I have loved my Bury College Travel course and the practical training has prepared me for a job in the industry.”

Despite personal challenges, she has remained a conscientious and dedicated travel student who constantly strives to exceed her targets and do her best. The enthusiasm and resilience Alison has displayed during both work experience placements has meant she has successfully secured employment in her dream job. It is testament to her and all her hard work that she has achieved this national nomination and has started her career in the travel and tourism industry.”
