T Levels Launching at Bury College in 2021

T Levels are new, high-quality technical qualifications - an exciting alternative to A-levels and apprenticeships that combine classroom theory with practical learning and an industry placement within a rigorous and substantial qualification.

  • T Levels are two year technical qualifications which have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses to meet the needs of different industries and to ensure that individuals have the knowledge, skills and behaviours to progress directly into industry.
  • The qualification is made up of core knowledge, understanding and concepts, specialist content covering occupational or industry-specific skills and an industry placement with an employer which will last a minimum of 45 days.
  • T Levels are equivalent to three A-levels and have UCAS tariff points

The 45 day work experience placement will give you the opportunity to gain the technical training needed to progress directly into industry.

T Levels are ideal if you want to:

  • Develop practical skills, knowledge and behaviours that show you are occupationally competent
  • Apply theory in real workplace settings
  • Combine classroom learning (80%) with on-the-job employment experience (20%)
  • Pursue a high-quality technical route into skilled employment, further study or higher/degree apprenticeships
  • Develop maths, English and digital skills within the qualification framework
  • Gain a nationally-recognised qualification with a certificated grade

You will sit an externally-set exam at the end of each academic year to test your understanding of the subject. You will also undertake a skill-assessment to demonstrate your competency skills. Whilst on work placement, you will be set a project by your employer that you must successfully complete to demonstrate your overall breadth of learning.

Work Experience Placement Pilot Scheme

In preparation for the delivery of T Level qualifications, Bury College has been running a pilot scheme with support from the Department for Education and working closely with local employers to offer 45 day work experience placements to students:

“The business strongly believes in inspiring the younger generation and believed it was a great opportunity to offer a 45 day placement to an aspiring engineer. This placement benefitted the student by allowing them to develop new skills in an industry setting and increase their confidence. We look forward to working with Bury College in the future.”

Gary McClung, Managing Director of Hopefield Fabrication Ltd, gave a Bury College Mechanical Engineering student a placement opportunity to develop advanced engineering skills.
