This course, which is awarded by the University of Cumbria and taught at Bury College University Centre, has been designed for those who are interested in pursuing a career working with children, young people and families. It is a natural progression for those that have studied our FdA Working with Children and Families, providing a Level 6 ‘Top Up’ to a full BA (Hons) degree.

On this Level 6 course you will cover a range of issues affecting children and families in today’s society. This includes:

  • Outdoor Environments and Experiential Learning
  • Enabling Practice and Empowerment for Communities
  • Supporting Health and Well being
  • Employability, progression and leadership
  • A Dissertation, practitioner-based independent study.

Each module has a varied and creative approach to assessment, including a ‘Dragons Den’ style community bid, devising activity plans for outdoor, experiential learning, portfolio to support employability and professional progression and your research based independent study for your dissertation based on your own area of relevant interest and expertise.

The degree is seated in work-based learning and experience in real work environments is an integral and mandatory part of the course. Approximately 50hrs experience in a suitable professional environment relevant to working with children, young people and families.

Career options are varied form working in schools, progressing onto a PGCE to become a qualified teacher, family support roles, safeguarding and pastoral roles and opportunities to progress into social work, youth justice and probation services.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.

The majority of students will be able to access a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England to pay their HE Course Fee.

Self-funding students may pay in 3 instalments in September (25%), January (25%) and April (50%).
