Bury College has taken a firm stand against hate crime and racism by raising awareness during Hate Crime Awareness Week, which ran from 12th to 19th October, in addition to supporting the Show Racism the Red Card initiative.
The start of the new academic year saw students and staff from our Catering courses move into brand-new facilities.
This new centre has three teaching classrooms, all with a capacity of up to 24 students. There is a general classroom with a Promethean screen to include a range of catering and cookery books that will double as a library for inspiration for dishes and menus.
The addition of a Nutrition Lab, will further develop theory by giving the students access to resources to support experiments and activities.
The teaching kitchen has been built in line with current industry standards, using smart cooking technology appliances. It’s also been designed with sustainability in mind, by including features to reduce overall energy usage.
A wider social space features 250 seats and will be managed by students across all three catering levels. Ensuring high quality and nutritious meals are provided for fellow students, whilst developing catering skills in a real-life working environment.
Some of our Level 2 Professional Cookery students spoke about the new facilities:
Isaac Drummond, a former Sharples High School pupil said, “I love working in the kitchen as it provides great work experience.”
Grace North who joined us from Oulder Hill Community School said, “The equipment is amazing. Working here has given me an insight into the industry.”
Michael Bromley, Head of Estates at Bury College, had this to say about the new facilities: “The completion of this refurbishment marks a pivotal achievement in our Woodbury Transformation Project and our broader accommodation strategy. I am thrilled that we can now provide current and future generations of Bury College Catering students with state-of-the-art facilities and industry-standard equipment, giving them the perfect start to their careers.”
The project has been funded by Department for Education Transformation Fund and Department for Education T-Level Specialist Equipment.
