
Bury College recently hosted a Higher Education Fair for its current learners, welcoming representatives from over 20 different universities.
We are delighted to share that Peter Nicol, Chair of Governors at Bury College is among those who were honoured in the 2023 New Year Honours list. He will be awarded a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire.
Peter has been a member of Bury College’s Governing Body since 2004, becoming Chair in 2008 and sets the highest standards of Governance, including regularly refreshing membership to update skills and expertise.
Throughout his time, Peter has inducted and mentored over 20 new Governors and has created an environment where everyone feels confident to contribute to discussions.
Peter was delighted with the news, he said: “I am delighted to receive this honour, which reflects the standing of the College within the community. I am grateful to the other Board members for their support over many years.”
Charlie Deane, Principal and Chief Executive of Bury College, added: “As Chair, Peter consistently sets the highest standards of Governance, including by regularly refreshing membership to update skills and expertise, introduce diverse views/thinking, and respond to community need. Peter has inducted and mentored over twenty new Governors to ensure they fully understand the role and has created an environment where they constructively contribute to the overall success of the College.
“During his tenure, Peter has overseen the College delivering education and training to over 100,000 students, including 50,000 16-18 year olds, of whom over 95% have successfully passed their course. His unrelenting pursuit of excellence has helped introduce key initiatives such as Positive Futures, which develops student’s key study, employability and transferrable skills, and which has seen thousands of students successfully progress to University and employment.”

Two dedicated apprentices working in a local nursery are proving that it’s never too late to upskill, thanks to the Early Years Level 5 Apprenticeship offered at Bury College.
Our art students have brought a splash of colour and creativity to Bury Hospice with a striking new mural celebrating the spirit of the local community. Painted by students from the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, the mural features vibrant hydrangeas and iconic Manchester Bees, symbolising unity, resilience, and the six towns of Bury.
