A famous Manchester City commentator, podcaster and author visited Bury College Sports students to provide them with a unique insight into the industry.
The Sports department were delighted to welcome Ian Cheeseman who delivered an engaging workshop to learners which discussed the exceptional career success he has achieved. This inspirational visit allowed students to identify the various career opportunities available, as well as the hard work and determination needed to achieve their goals.
Ian has carved a successful career following a club he has supported all his life. Ian started as a Manchester City steward in the 1970’s before commentating on games for the club and spending 23 years at the BBC. He has also achieved huge success presenting radio shows and podcasts and has penned numerous top selling books including ‘Reluctant Hero: Colin Bell’. Ian now manages YouTube channel ‘Ian Cheeseman – Forever Blue’ and is a weekly newspaper columnist.
Ian Cheeseman said, “It was great to visit the students today and discuss the different opportunities I have had. To be successful, individuals must be determined, driven, enthusiastic and hardworking. Not every job opportunity comes as a result of a qualification, employers are also looking for passion and I hope that students have left this session with the encouragement they need to work hard and achieve their goals.”
The visit was organised by Paul Howarth, Bury College Work Experience Placement Co-ordinator and Charles Louis Mortgage Advisers Ltd and Charles Louis Homes who have proudly sponsored Ian for several years. David Cookson, Managing Director said, “I have been in discussions with the work experience team at Bury College regarding the various work experience opportunities and how as a local business we can support young people. I was really happy to have helped organise today’s session and further support the young people of Bury.”
The session was well received by students. Aaron Hinchcliffe, a Level 3 Sport student and former The Elton High School pupil said, “Today’s talk was really interesting and aspirational. It was great to hear Ian’s career story and how he got to where he is now.”
Ben Fallows, Head of Curriculum for Sport at Bury College said, “Ian’s workshop with our students was brilliant, he discussed what makes an individual stand out and the attributes they need to display in a competitive industry. A huge thank you to Ian for taking the time to share his career story and encourage the next generation.”
