How Bury College provides ESOL learners with an introduction to life in the UK
ESOL (English as a Second Language) learners from our Step Up to Prospects course recently celebrated their achievements over the last year.
Bury College was delighted to welcome Year 12 students back to a safe learning environment today and provide learners with the opportunity to continue their education.
In line with recommendations from the Department for Education and government scientific advice, lessons took place in a safe and supported environment. Staff adopted safe working practices and were on-hand to help students and offer guidance and support.
In order to ensure the safety of students and staff, a high number of support measures were implemented. Following government guidance, these included smaller class sizes, strict social distancing rules, the closure of all communal areas and access into allocated classrooms only. All students received a clear induction on these new measures and their expectations.
The College has remained open throughout these unprecedented times in order to support the needs of vulnerable learners and children of key workers. This experience of having continually provided a safe learning environment strongly placed the College ready for this supportive, phased return for learners.
This return to study is optional for both staff and students. For those who are unable to attend, they will be able to continue their studies using the College’s distance learning resources.
Charlie Deane, Bury College Principal and Chief Executive said,
“The safety and welfare of our students and staff are of the utmost importance and the College is continuing to strictly follow all government guidance to ensure appropriate measures are in place. This return to a safe learning environment is welcomed, as we are aware that many of our students are keen to return to their studies. Our students already possess a mature approach to their studies. This approach, combined with the College’s supportive social distancing measures, will ensure a safe learning environment.”
Lee Holt, Bury College A-level Accountancy, Business and Finance student said,
“It was great to return to College today, there was lots of support and guidance around the campus which made me feel safe and comfortable. I could tell a lot of thought had gone into planning our return. I feel that I have really benefitted from today’s face-to-face teaching as the learning experience is much greater.”
