17-year-old Supermoto and road racer Scarlett Robinson is to feature in Netflix documentary, Queens of Speed. A camera crew recently visited the Level 3 Sport student on campus to film a segment on her experience at Bury College.
Scarlett has been road racing since she was 14, and has recently entered into a new partnership with FHO racing. The documentary follows Scarlett and 16-year-old Charlotte Marcuzzo, also on the team, as they compete in the HEL Performance British Junior Supersport Championship. The documentary will spotlight young female racers, and show their preparation for the season over the 12 months of filming.
While filming at college, Scarlett discussed how she managed to juggle college work with racing at such a high level. She said, “I’m always busy but college is really accommodating. I get additional time off so I can fit in races, and extended deadlines for some of my work. I also get additional hours of support if I need them, and can do bike-specific training in college. There’s more pressure now I’m in my second year of college and in association with FHO, but I train harder and have found a way of balancing it.”
Lauren Glossop, a Team Leader in Sport and one of Scarlett’s tutors, was also filmed for the documentary. She said, “Scarlett is superhuman for her age, she handles the pressure of college and her racing really well. Many of the units on her course help her in her racing, such as the Sport Psychology module we studied this year. Recently we also looked at rehab after an injury – all of this goes hand in hand with what she is doing out on the track.”
Lauren added, “There’s still not much awareness of women in sport. All of the main competitors in racing are male, there aren’t as many role models for women. Hopefully Scarlett and this documentary will go some way towards changing that.”
Queens of Speed is planned to air on Netflix in Spring 2022.
