The Step Up to Prospects Course helps you develop English speaking and listening skills for everyday life, work, and study, while also building confidence and communication skills. The course supports understanding of local communities, services, and daily situations to help learners improve independence. The main aim is to improve English skills, raise aspirations, and support informed choices about future study or employment. You will develop practical language, confidence, and life skills in a supportive environment, with opportunities to explore different curriculum areas and prepare for further progression.
You will study English reading, writing, speaking and listening as a significant part of the course to develop your communication skills. You will also complete units on independent living skills and living in the community.
Assessment is carried out through a range of methods, including written assignments, practical activities, role play, presentations, group discussions and digital tasks. You will also study English and Maths, take part in community or voluntary activities, and complete units designed to develop your employability, personal, and social skills.
Step Up to Prospects supports you to progress through the levels, achieve recognised qualifications, and gain experience that prepares you for employment and may lead to progression onto one of the many exciting vocational pathways offered at Bury College.
You
may be asked to contribute to costs of trips and visits that support the
curriculum.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.
For Step Up to Prospects: Entry is subject to Interview, EHCP (if applicable) and Initial Assessments. Students should be interested in improving their English and maths skills and committed to attendance and participation in all activities
