Criminology requires you to analyse crime and reasons for criminal behaviour, by applying theories from both psychology and sociology.

These courses have been designed to support you to progress onto university as well as careers in a variety of fields. Subject related topics and guest speakers will also feature as part of your study programme .

Qualification studied:

  • WJEC Level 3 Diploma in Criminology
  • A-level equivalent to be taken as part of an A-level Study Programme

The topics studied on this course are:

  • Types of crime and deviance
  • Reporting of crime
  • Impact of the media on the perception of crime
  • Methods used to gather crime statistics
  • Types of campaigns and planning a campaign for an unreported crime
  • Biological, individualistic and sociological theories of crime and their influence upon laws made
  • Personnel involved in the criminal investigation process, such as forensic scientists
  • Processing of evidence
  • Rights of suspects during a criminal investigation
  • Trial and appeal process in a criminal case
  • Rules of evidence for criminal cases
  • Law making processes
  • The role of punishment
  • Agencies of social control, such as the police

  • 50% controlled assessment
  • 50% exam

For A-level programmes: 6 GCSEs at grade 9-4 (to include 3 GCSEs at grade 9-4 and 3 GCSEs at grade 9-5). Require grade 9-4 in English Language and Maths.
