The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning has been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. It covers a wide range of areas including children and young people’s development, supporting children and young people’s positive behaviour and communication and professional relationships.

It is aimed at learners working in roles that support pupils’ learning in primary, secondary or special schools, as well as colleges.

There are 11 units in this course covering the following topics:

  • Understand schools and colleges as organisations.
  • Understand children and young people's development.
  • Safeguarding children and young people.
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in a learning environment for children and young people.
  • Maintain relationships with children and young people.
  • Support the health and safety of children and young people.
  • Support positive behaviour in a learning environment for children and young people.
  • Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment.
  • Understand children and young people’s play and leisure.
  • Promote an effective learning environment.
  • Provide displays in a learning environment.

Age ranges covered by the qualification - From five years of age. Please note that some knowledge of development in the early years has been included in the specification to enhance learners’ understanding.   Real work environment (RWE) requirement - As learners need to show competence in both skills and knowledge, they will need to be working or be on a practical placement during the taught programme of study in a learning environment (school or college). At Cerifciate level, CACHE recommends that the learner undertake  placement in a real work environment. DBS required.

Students required to complete an initial English assessment unless already holding an English certificate level 1 or above. 12 hour weekly placement in School ages 5-19 to be secured prior to course start. Essential students have a DBS for your placement; college can carry this out.

Some courses are free for eligible learners, this is shown in the course details. You may be eligible for a free course if you are:

  • Unemployed and in receipt of an income-based benefit (for example JSA, ESA or Universal Credit)
  • Employed and earning less than the low-income threshold
  • Studying for your first full Level 2 qualification on an eligible legal entitlement course
  • Aged 19-23 and studying for your first full Level 3 qualification or on an eligible legal entitlement course
  • Your eligibility for a free course will be assessed and confirmed at enrolment.

ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN

Many of our adult learners pay for their Level 3 and above courses with an Advanced Learner Loan. If a loan is available this is indicated in the course details. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there are no credit checks. You only need to start paying back your Advanced Learner Loan when you are earning more than £25,000 per year.
