A stimulating and challenging programme of study that will be both engaging and memorable. This qualification will provide you with the essential subject knowledge needed to progress successfully into further study or into the world of work. You will undertake a core of learning in Applied Science as well as the opportunity to specialise in your desired Science related pathway.

The pathways include:

• Biology

• Chemistry

You will develop knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the Applied Sciences sector through core units. The units include:

·                Fundamentals of Laboratory Techniques 

·                Scientific data handling approaches and techniques

·                Regulation and Quality in the Applied Sciences

·                Specialist units on the Biology pathway include:

·                Cell Biology

·                Fundamentals of Chemistry

·                Anatomy and Human Physiology

·                Principles of Ecology and their Applications

·                Fundamentals of Biochemistry

·                Specialist units on the Chemistry pathway include:

·                Organic Chemistry

·                Inorganic Chemistry

·                Physical Chemistry

·                Fundamentals of Biochemistry

·                Plus one other as chosen by the University of Salford

You will be assessed through a range of different methods.

Successful completion of the HNC in Applied Sciences guarantees a year 2 place at the University of Salford on a range of Biology/Chemistry related degrees.

The course provides opportunities for you to enter employment in the Applied Sciences or the chance to progress on to further study.

Students who successfully complete their Applied Sciences HNC Chemistry pathway have a guaranteed place on the second year of a BSc (Hons) Chemistry at the University of Salford.

Those students who successfully complete the Applied Sciences HNC Biology pathway, also have a guaranteed place at the University of Salford on the second year of one of the following degrees; BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences, BSc (Hons) Human Biology and Infectious Diseases or BSc (Hons) Zoology. Please note that different fees will apply.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.

BTEC Applied in a Science related subject minimum MMP (equivalent to 80 UCAS points) or 2 A-levels (D or above) in a Science related subject – every application is considered on an individual basis. Applicants should also have five GCSE grades 9-4 (A*-C) or equivalent including Science, English and Maths. The University Centre will also consider applicants who have passed a Kitemarked Access to Higher Education course (equivalent to 80 UCAS points). If you do not have the standard entry requirements but have relevant work experience or an alternative qualification you may still be eligible for the course. You may be required to attend for an interview or assessment.

The majority of students will be able to access a Tuition Fee Loan from Student Finance England to pay their HE Course Fee.

Self-funding students may pay in 3 instalments in September (25%), January (25%) and April (50%).

Course Fee: £8,250.00 per year
