This Level 1 course will introduce you to carpentry and joinery skills. You will learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment and/or career progression in carpentry or joinery.

In 2022, around 4,000 people were employed by the construction industry in Bury with many more being employed across the wider regional area.

At Bury College, our wide range of courses are aimed at those looking to upskill, start a new career or simply learn a new skill to help you with DIY in your own home.

The topics studied on this course are:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries
  • Knowledge of technical information, quantities and communication with others
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Producing woodworking joints
  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools

Assessments are throughout the year, at the end of each unit. Assessments include practical observations and theory-based question papers.

  • Wood Machinist

You are required to purchase PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that you must wear in all practical sessions; this will include a hi-visibility vest, a pair of gloves and safety goggles, all available to purchase from college at enrolment. In addition, you will also need to purchase a pair of steel toe capped boots.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.

For Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery: 3 GCSEs at grade 9-3 (including Maths and English Language) OR GCSE 9-3 in Maths & English Language and a Pass on the L1 Diploma in Preparation for Employment in the Construction Industry.
