Sam Ellithorn, a former Bury College student, has gone on to do great things since leaving us and has recently won the University of Salford Higher Level Engineering Apprentice of the Year award.

The former Woodhey High School pupil joined us in 2018 and shone throughout his two years, eventually achieving a Triple Distinction star. During this time, he undertook a placement with the local Engineering firm Cheetham Hill Construction and impressed them straight away.

After the placement, they offered him a Higher-Level Apprenticeship Degree at the University of Salford in Civil Engineering and he is about to finish his third year. He has carried on developing his skills and is now working for them on the HS2 project in Birmingham, the largest infrastructure project in Europe.

Claire, Director at Cheetham Hill Construction, added: “Sam is the first Higher Level Apprentice Cheetham Hill Construction have taken on and it has cemented our view that we need to continue investing in young people.”

Sam is delighted with his career progress so far. He said: “I have now completed two and a half years of my degree apprenticeship; I have been exposed to many different sites across the North West gaining vital knowledge and experience to be able to become a qualified and experienced civil engineer. This will allow me to, over time, move my way up to become a site manager and beyond. My time at Bury College cemented the idea that I wanted to become an engineer, giving me the basic ideas and principles of what it takes to be a successful engineer within the industry.”
