Film Studies is the study of film as an art form. You will study everything from the early days of silent film with Buster Keaton, to Classic Hollywood exploring the “Master of Suspense”, Hitchcock, to gritty British film 'Trainspotting' and world film including the Argentinean black comedy 'Wild Tales'. You will gain understanding of the significance of each film via specialist study.

The skills you will develop by studying film can springboard you into a wide variety of careers .

  • Core study areas include Film Form, Meaning and Response and Context of the films studied

Within most films there is a specialist study area including:

  • Auteur for Classic Hollywood and experimental film
  • Narrative and storytelling in British film
  • Spectatorship and response in Contemporary Hollywood films
  • Critical debates including the impact of filmmakers on others in documentary, surrealism in silent film and digital technology

Assessment will be 70% exam and 30% coursework.

Film students from Bury College have gone on to careers in:

For A-level programmes: 6 GCSEs at grade 9-4 (to include 3 GCSEs at grade 9-4 and 3 GCSEs at grade 9-5). Require grade 9-4 in English Language and Maths.
