This course enables you to analyse a wide variety of media products, which may include advertising, film, radio, video games, newspapers and online media.

You will develop knowledge and understanding of media language, representation, audience and industrial and cultural contexts. You will gain the skills necessary for constructing or deconstructing media. Key media theories are also studied, with the application and evaluation of these assessed through written examinations.

You will be able to engage critically with different pieces of media and apply an analytical framework that helps you better understand the world we live in.

  • Newspapers, radio, video games, music videos, advertising and film marketing
  • Detailed study exploring three mainstream texts and three specialist texts of three industries; television, magazines and online media
  • Media has four key areas of study that will be applied to each media text:

- Media Language and how to analyse and deconstruct media products

- Representations, exploring the historical context of media products and how media producers construct images and texts to convey messages to audiences

- Industry - how media businesses, from Disney as a powerful Hollywood studio to a YouTube Vlogger, make content and, more importantly, make money

- Audiences - how media products attract, appeal and target specific audiences and how media audiences are not all same

Assessment is 70% exam and 30% coursework, including a practical production piece and evaluation.
