As you prepare to start your studies at Bury College, we have put together a range of tips, tools and resources to help support you in your next steps.
If you have any further questions relating to your application, please email admissions@burycollege.ac.uk.

Travel

For all those aged 16 or 17 living in the Greater Manchester area, the Our Pass Travel card gives free bus travel across Greater Manchester at any time. As well as free bus travel, Our Pass will also offer discounted access to events, free products and initiatives which aims to support young people to look at careers and work opportunities.

Applications for this can be done online via the Our Pass online portal www.ourpass.co.uk or you can collect a paper application form from your local GMPTE Travel Shop. Adult Student concessions may also be available - see www.tfgm.com for details.

Students who are not eligible for the Our Pass can also apply for financial support to help them with their travel expenses through Bursary funding.

Please apply for your Our Pass as soon as possible so that you have it ready for when you start in September – you will have to pay full adult fare without it!

There are various bursaries available for students of all ages who are experiencing financial difficulty whilst studying at Bury College. Applications for Bursaries will open online from Thursday 24th August 2023 and can be accessed via the college website in the Student Support – Financial Support section.

If you require additional advice, please make contact with the Student Services Team at the Millennium Centre on 0161 280 8421 or via student.services@burycollege.ac.uk

Please note - some funds are limited and therefore funding is not guaranteed later on in the year so it’s important to apply as soon as possible.

Childcare Funding

There is a limited amount of funding to support students with childcare costs and we advise that you make contact with Student Services as soon as possible if you think you may require access to this funding.  Please contact Anne Holt in Student Services at student.services@burycollege.ac.uk

Returning Students
You must re-apply each academic year for support even if you are staying on the same course.  Funding does not automatically roll over.

Scholarships and Awards

Sports Scholarship - £150 per year

The Bury College Sports Scholarship actively encourages students who participate in representative sports at regional, county, national or international level.  The student does not have to be on a sport-related course to qualify for this scholarship.

Community Scholarship - £150 per year

Are you a young leader, volunteer or contributor to the community?  If so, then you could be eligible for the Bury College Community Scholarship. Bury College is keen to support young people who are involved in the community.

To qualify for this award you must be able to demonstrate that you have made a genuine difference to people's lives through volunteering or community work outside of school hours.

The Sport and Community Scholarships are paid in two instalments based upon a minimum 95% attendance.  Each application will be judged on its individual merit, and you will be notified via email if you are successful. Application forms will be available from Thursday 24th August 2023 from the Student Services team.

Additional Learning Support Needs

Students may require additional support for many reasons. Additional Learning Support (ALS) is available to students with mild to profound learning difficulties and disabilities. The ALS team will complete an assessment of support to ensure that your needs can be met by the college in line with your aspirations.

Please contact the team as soon as you can so we can ensure support is put in place for you as quickly as possible.  Additional Learning Support staff will be available throughout the enrolment period.  Please do not hesitate to contact us.  We are here to help. The ALS Team can also be contacted on 0161 280 8442.

Kits and Uniforms

Certain courses require you to purchase specific items, this is discussed with you at your Information Advice and Guidance appointment. For courses affected, you will receive an email with further information regarding this.

If you do need to purchase anything, don’t worry – you have the first six weeks of term to arrange this.  There are also bursaries available to cover some of these costs – Student Services can also help with this.
