Our Carpentry and Joinery courses provide you with an opportunity to progress through the levels and develop advanced skills, underpinning knowledge and associated practical skills which are expected of a Site Carpenter within the construction industry.

You will complete a range of practical projects, work experience placements and develop your skills and knowledge through studying a wide range of subjects.

The topics studied on this course are:

  • Health, safety and welfare in construction and associated industries (unless completed at Level 1)
  • Understanding information, quantities, and communication with others
  • Understanding construction technology
  • Preparing and using carpentry and joinery portable power tools
  • Carry out first fixing operations
  • Carry out second fixing operations
  • Carry out structural carcassing operations
  • Carry out maintenance to nonstructural carpentry work

This programme includes a 45-day (315 hour) industry placement to help you develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours to progress into employment within the sector.

This programme is assessed through end of year synoptic assessments and theory based exams. Students are provided with a scenario, for which they need to plan, complete, and evaluate a range of practical tasks.

You are required to purchase PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that you must wear in all practical sessions; this will include a hi-visibility vest, a pair of gloves and safety goggles, all available to purchase from college at enrolment. In addition, you will also need to purchase a pair of steel toe capped boots.

You will also engage in the Positive Futures Careers Programme, developing key employability skills through a diverse range of activities including work placements, volunteering, employer talks, industry study visits and employment and university fairs.

For Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery: Level 1 Carpentry and Joinery plus 3 GCSEs at grade 9-3 (including Maths and English Language). OR GCSE 9-4 in Maths & English Language and a pass on the Level 1 Carpentry & Joinery Course.
