Improve your Carpentry and joinery. This will help you for your own home DIY or discover a new career. During this evening course you will complete practical tasks such as basic construction carpentry techniques.

Some of the topics will include:

·         Know about legislation and organisational policies and procedures related to health and safety.

·         Know about the hazards and risks within the construction industry

·         Know about incident reporting procedures.

·         Know how hazards and risks are controlled.

·         Know about own responsibilities and behaviours necessary when working in construction.

·         Know about welfare and personal hygiene in construction

·         Know about first aid in construction.

·         Know about the importance of security arrangements in construction.

·         Know the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements of manual handling.

·         Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements of working at heights

·         Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements for hazardous substances.

·         Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety related to the use of plant and equipment in the construction industry.

·         Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements of confined space working.

·         Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements relating to fire and firefighting equipment.

·         Know about the hazards, risks and health and safety requirements relating to working with, and around, electrical equipment.

Assessment of this unit will be through the completion of two NOCN devised practical tasks and associated knowledge questions (written or verbal). This unit is internally assessed and internally and externally quality assured using the NOCN assessment booklets to evidence all learning outcomes.

Scope of Assessment The learners will complete two live carpentry and joinery assessments, available from NOCN. The following are examples of what the assessments are based around:

• Skirting and architraves

• Floor joists

• Flooring

• Door lining

• Hanging a door

• Window frames

• Fixed truss

• Units and worktops

This short course is a fantastic opportunity to save money on completing your own substantial DIY projects. There will also be no cost for materials or equipment. 

There are no specific entry requirements for this course, you will need to pass an initial assessment to determine your English skills.

Some courses are FREE for eligible learners. You may be eligible for a FREE course if you are:

  • Unemployed and in receipt of an income-based benefit (for example JSA, ESA or Universal Credit)
  • Employed and earning less than £23,104
  • Studying for your first full Level 2 qualification on an eligible legal entitlement course
  • Aged 19-23 and studying for your first full Level 3 qualification or on an eligible legal entitlement course
  • Aged 19+ and studying for your first full Level 3 qualification on an eligible course which is part of the Level 3 Free Courses for Jobs scheme
  • Aged 19+ and studying a course that is part of the Level 3 Free Courses for Jobs Scheme, and unemployed or earning less than £23,104
  • Aged 19+ and studying for your first or second full Level 3 qualification on an eligible GM Offer Level 3 course

ADVANCED LEARNER LOAN

Many of our adult learners pay for their Level 3 and above courses with an Advanced Learner Loan. If a loan is available this is indicated in the course details. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken into account and there are no credit checks. You only need to start paying back your Advanced Learner Loan when you are earning more than £25,000 per year.
