The role of the community interpreter is becoming increasingly important.  The interpreter acts as a bridge between communities and enables people to access services and situations which otherwise would not be possible.

The Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting enables learners who already have high levels of language skills in both their first language and English, to undertake interpreting work at a basic level of two-way communication and progress to Level 4.

What topics will I study?

  • Developing your own performance as a community interpreter
  • Working as a Community Interpreter in Public Services
  • Supporting interpreting through sight translation
  • Interpret two way (level 3)
  • Planning to work as a Community Interpreter within a choice of sectors, including educational settings, the health service and immigration.

Most units are internally assessed through the learner building up a portfolio of evidence that covers the relevant assessment criteria, internally assessed and verified by the centre and then externally verified by the awarding body. However, there will be an external assessment of your native language and English skills. You would also be required to build up a large glossary of terms in both languages related to the work sectors you choose.

Students are required to hold a level 2 qualification in preparing for the community Interpreting role and will also need to pass an assessment to determine your English skills.
